Many of us remember Gwen Buckingham with affection. Philip Tranter offered to pray for her on this, the anniversary of her death. Sadly, he too has now gone ahead. Would anyone like to ‘adopt’ Gwen?

Today’s Gospel looks beyond suffering and death to the glory of the Resurrection: in the Transfiguration we see what is to be, both for Jesus and for ourselves. No darkness can extinguish the light of that hope.

Philip Bentley, Jim Buxton, Margaret Buxton, Paige Buxton & Linda Woodcock would like to thank everyone who helped make last Tuesday’s Baptism, Confirmation & Affirmation such a joyful event. Our thanks to Jim & Margaret for the splendid buffet afterwards.

Thanks to all who have supported Present Aid. The offer closes today. Please mark any gift aid envelopes ‘Present Aid’.

All times of Services this Week are shown on the notices on the doors and at the back of Church. We celebrate the Eucharist on Monday at 10:00; on Shrove Tuesday at 10:00; on ASH WEDNESDAY at 09:00 (said) & 19:30 (sung); on Friday at 10:00; and on Saturday at 09:30, followed by Church cleaning and other jobs. There is no Eucharist on Thursday. Wednesday is a Fast Day and Friday is a Day of Abstinence. Confessions after Tuesday Eucharist or Saturday Evensong or by arrangement.

The day before Lent is Shrove Tuesday (from Anglo-Saxon shrivan, to absolve.) Confessions after the 10:00 Eucharist. There is a Pancake Party at the Vicarage at 19:30: come and ‘toss’ away self-indulgence!

Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, which takes its name from the ashes made from last year’s Palm crosses, which we use as a sign of penitence. The Church invites all who confess the name of Christ to mark this holy season by sharing in the Eucharist, said at 09:00 and sung at 19:30. You are also invited to observe this day as a Fast Day, which means only taking one meal or only enough food to keep yourself going.

What do you do with the money you save on things you give up for Lent? You could do something really useful like supporting the Bishop’s Lent Appeal. Take a jar, fill it, and bring it back at Easter.

Michael Hodgkiss’ illustrated talk on Icons, Gates of Mystery, is next Wednesday, February 24th, at 19:30. Tickets are available (£3.50 including refreshments). All welcome.
